UTM and Forest City already know each other
This would not be a cold start. In October 2018, UTM undergraduates received the Forest City-UTM Future Force Scholarship, worth RM370,000 in total, at a ceremony in the Forest City sales gallery. UTM and the developer, Country Garden Pacificview, also signed a memorandum of understanding to train UTM students for jobs in Forest City.
A campus would be the next step in a relationship that is already eight years old.
UTM is a public research university focused on engineering, science and technology. Its main campus is in Skudai, Johor Bahru, with a second campus in Kuala Lumpur. Times Higher Education lists about 18,000 students, roughly 2,500 of them from overseas.
What Forest City has for education today
Forest City set aside a 9.4-hectare education hub early on. Its first school, Shattuck-St. Mary's Forest City International School, opened in August 2018 with an American curriculum, day and boarding places, and around 150 pioneer students. The school project was reported at RM935 million.
What is missing is somewhere to study after high school. A university campus fills that gap.
Why buyers are watching
If the campus is confirmed, here is what changes for an owner.
| What changes | Why it matters to you | Still to be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| A fuller education path | International school to university in one township. Families planning a long stay, MM2H holders included, look for this. | Which faculties come |
| More people on weekdays | Students and lecturers need to live, eat and shop nearby. That supports rentals and the shops downstairs. | Student numbers and hostel plans |
| A long-term anchor | A public university stays for decades. It gives Forest City a daily purpose beyond weekend visitors. | Timeline and phases |
How big the effect is depends on the numbers in the right-hand column. Ask for them before you put a figure on rental income.
